Frog

Free crochet tutorial for a Frog by Natalia Lobzova.

Using this pattern, you can crochet a frog. Any cotton blend yarn will work for this amigurumi: Alize Cotton Gold, YarnArt Jeans, Gazzal Baby Cotton, and others.

The finished toy is about 9 cm tall.

Materials and Tools

• Alize Cotton Gold yarn: green, light green (for the frog)
• Vita Cotton Lira yarn: white, black (for the eyes)
• 2.5 mm crochet hook
• Toy stuffing
• Needle for sewing pieces together
• Scissors

Head and Body

With green yarn:

Finish stuffing, cut the yarn, and close the opening.

Belly

Start with light green yarn:

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and fasten off. Then continue with green yarn:

From the place where you finished crocheting, count 15 stitches back, join the green yarn to the 16th stitch, make 1 ch, work 15 sc along the previous partial round, then sl st into the next stitch.

Cut the yarn, but do not fasten off; simply pull it through the loop. The belly will be sewn on from the beginning of the body upward. The edge crocheted in green remains unsewn - this is the lip. Attach the remaining green yarn tails to the body and hide them inside.

Eyes (make 2)

Start with green yarn:

1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc = 12 sc
3: (inc, 1 sc) x 6 = 18 sc
4: 18 sc
Pull the loop longer so it will not come undone. Leave the green yarn for now (it should stay on the outside), and continue with white yarn:
5: Work 18 sc in the back loops of the stitches from the previous round
6-7: 18 sc
8: (dec, 1 sc) x 6 = 12 sc
Stuff the eyes
9: 6 dec = 6 sc

Finish stuffing, cut the yarn, and close the opening.

Pick up the green yarn again and work 18 sc into the remaining front loops of the green round, then sl st. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and fasten off. Sew the eyes on from the top of the head and slightly forward, around the green eyelid, close to each other and slightly angled inward.

At the front, when sewing, catch only the front (outer) loop of the stitches. After sewing on the eyes, secure them to each other so they do not spread apart.

Pupils (make 2)

Use black yarn. For the pupils, use thin yarn and a small hook.

1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc = 12 sc, sl st.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and fasten off. Sew the pupils on at an inward angle. With white yarn, embroider the highlights: two simple corner-shaped stitches, each as long as 1 pupil round.

Front Legs (make 2)

With green yarn:

1: 5 sc in MR
2: 5 inc = 10 sc
3: (2 sc, dec, 1 sc) x 2 = 8 sc
4: (dec, 2 sc) x 2 = 6 sc
5: (1 sc, dec) x 2 = 4 sc

Fold the piece in half and crochet through both edges (do not stuff). You will get only 1 sc total (do not catch the side stitches). Leave the sides unworked.

Work 1 more sc into the same place (so it counts as an inc), then crochet around the sides of the piece with sc directly through the fabric (piercing it all the way through), making 1 more inc around the magic ring.

At the end, make a sl st into the first stitch of the round, pull the loop longer, and pull the piece through it, fastening the yarn. Do not cut the yarn.

Turn the piece with the yarn facing you and pick up 6 sc directly along it: 4 sc along the edge through the back loop and 2 sc directly through the fabric.

For the first stitch, bring the yarn out through the loop on the right and make 1 ch. Work 4 more rounds of 6 sc, cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, stuff this part of the leg, and close the opening.

Sew the front legs to the front, roughly at the level of the belly's magic ring, so the frog can sit while leaning on them. Do not sew only at the very tip; sew around the leg and catch a little farther down so the legs stay stable.

Back Legs (make 2)

With green yarn:

Part 1:

Following the front leg instructions, crochet the foot, then in the same way pick up 6 sc along it.

Work 6 more rounds of 6 sc, make a sl st, and cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing the opening closed (do not pull the opening tight).

Part 2:

1: 6 sc in MR

Leave the starting yarn tail long (for sewing the leg to the body), and keep it on the outside.

2-6: 6 sc

Stuff both parts of the leg and crochet them together. On each part, work 4 sc and skip 2 sc between them (you will sew this little hole closed later). The foot should face forward. The result is:

7: 4 sc + 4 sc = 8 sc
8: (dec, 2 sc) x 2 = 6 sc, sl st

Cut the yarn, close the opening, and hide the yarn tail inside. Skip 2 sc between the parts of the leg. Finish stuffing through the opening under the knee. Sew up the legs and the little hole. Crochet the second leg the same way. Sew the legs about 6 rounds from the beginning of the body, 1.5-2 stitches away from the light belly. As with the front legs, sew around the piece.
