Willy the Snowman

Free crochet tutorial for Willy the Snowman by Anna Belousova @3akids_toys.

Using this pattern, you can crochet a snowman in a hat and scarf. Any cotton blend yarn will work for this amigurumi project: YarnArt Jeans, Alize Cotton Gold, Gazzal Baby Cotton, and others. You can use a ready-made pompom for the hat or make one yourself.

The finished toy is about 20 cm tall.

Materials and Tools

• YarnArt Jeans yarn: 01-white, 51-red, 63-emerald, 85-dark terracotta
• 2 mm crochet hook
• Safety eyes, 10 mm
• Toy stuffing
• Needle for sewing pieces together
• Scissors

Willy the Snowman Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Arms (make 2)

Start crocheting with red yarn. First crochet the mitten thumb:

Round 1: 6 sc in MR.
Round 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 - 9 sc.
Rounds 4-8: 9 sc (5 rounds).

Crochet the mitten:
Round 1: 6 sc in MR.
Round 2: inc in each stitch - 12 sc.
Round 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 - 18 sc.
Rounds 4-6: 18 sc (3 rounds).
Round 7: 7 sc, dec, 7 sc, dec - 16 sc.
Round 8: Next, start attaching the thumb to the base of the mitten: crochet 3 sc together with the thumb, then crochet the remaining 13 sc (16 sc).
Round 9: Crochet 6 sc around the remaining thumb stitches. Then crochet the remaining 13 sc. You should have 19 sc total.
Round 10: 19 sc.

Change to white yarn and start crocheting the arm. Do not cut the red yarn yet; leave it on the right side for edging the mitten later.

Round 11: Crochet with white yarn - 19 sc.
Then, with red yarn, crochet sc around the mitten edge through the post of the last round worked in red - 16 sc (see photo). Then make 2 ch for height and crochet 15 more hdc. Fasten off, cut the yarn, and hide the end.
Then continue crocheting the arm with white yarn:
Round 12: (4 sc, dec) x 3, 1 sc - 16 sc.
Rounds 13-30: 16 sc (18 rounds).

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Crochet the second arm the same way.

Legs (make 2)

Crochet with white yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR.
Round 2: inc in each stitch - 12 sc.
Round 3: 3 inc, (1 sc, inc) x 4, 1 sc - 19 sc.
Round 4: 6 inc, 6 sc, 1 inc, 6 sc - 26 sc.
Round 5: 12 hdc, 14 sc.
Round 6: 12 hdc, 14 sc.
Round 7: (1 sc, dec) x 4, 1 sc, (1 sc, dec) x 4, 1 sc - 18 sc.
Round 8: (1 sc, dec) x 6 - 12 sc.
Round 9: 12 sc.
Round 10: 12 sc.

Finish crocheting, fasten off, and cut the yarn. Crochet the second leg the same way.

Body and Head

The body and head are crocheted together. Start with white yarn:

Round 1: 6 sc in MR.

Next, start crocheting the head:

Round 47: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 5, 2 sc - 36 sc.

Round 49: 3 sc, inc, (6 sc, inc) x 5, 3 sc - 48 sc.
Round 50: (7 sc, inc) x 6 - 54 sc.

Rounds 52-60: 60 sc (9 rounds).

I recommend attaching the eyes between rounds 59 and 60, about 1.5-2 cm apart.

Round 61: 4 sc, dec, (8 sc, dec) x 5, 4 sc - 54 sc.
Round 62: (7 sc, dec) x 6 - 48 sc.
Round 63: 3 sc, dec, (6 sc, dec) x 5, 3 sc - 42 sc.
Round 64: (5 sc, dec) x 6 - 36 sc.
Round 65: 2 sc, dec, (4 sc, dec) x 5, 2 sc - 30 sc.
Round 66: (3 sc, dec) x 6 - 24 sc.

Fasten off, cut the yarn, and pull the remaining stitches closed.

Carrot Nose

Crochet with yarn 85 - dark terracotta.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR.
Round 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 - 9 sc.
Rounds 3-6: 9 sc (4 rounds).
Round 7: (1 sc, inc) x 3, 1 sc - 13 sc.

Fasten off, leaving a small tail for sewing on the nose.

Scarf

Crochet with green yarn (63 - emerald). With a 3.5 mm hook, make 60 ch using an elastic chain foundation + 1 turning ch (the scarf measures 5 x 35 cm, not including the fringe).

Row 1: 60 sc.
Row 2: 60 sc into the horizontal bar.
Row 3: 60 sc.
Row 4: 60 sc into the horizontal bar.
Row 5: 60 sc.
Row 6: 60 sc into the horizontal bar.
Row 7: 60 sc.
Row 8: 60 sc into the horizontal bar.
Row 9: 60 sc.

Fasten off and cut the yarn. If you like, you can add fringe to the scarf ends and crochet around the edges with slip stitches.

Hat

Crochet with red yarn (51). Use a 2.5 mm hook.

Make 8 ch + 1 turning ch (the ribbing height in my case is 2.5 cm). Crochet 56 rows with slip stitches. Join the ends of the hat ribbing together with slip stitches. Switch to a 3.5 mm hook and start crocheting the main part of the hat. Work in the round with turning rounds. Crochet the first round on the right side, working sc into each stitch of the ribbing (into the braid stitches and into the spaces between the braids). Then crochet 15 rounds of sc in the back loop only.

When the hat reaches the desired height (mine is 9 cm, including the ribbing), pull the top of the hat closed with yarn and sew on a pompom.

Toy Assembly

• Sew the legs and nose to the snowman.
• Embroider a smile.
