Assembly

Crochet amigurumi chick

Mark the center front of the toy with a bright thread. There are 8 sc between the feet. To place them symmetrically, count 4 sc to the left and right from the center line along round 8. Sew the feet themselves at the level of round 6 so they sit slightly recessed.

There are 12 sc between the wings. Mine are moved slightly forward. For symmetry, also count 6 sc from the center line on each side. The upper point of the wing is placed at round 18. The wings themselves are tilted at a 45-degree angle. You can experiment and choose your own placement. Sew them only at the upper points so the chick can spread them out if desired. You can also make a thread joint.

Mark the eye positions between rounds 33 and 34. There are 8 sc between the eyes. While sewing them on, make the shaping pulls right away. Insert the needle with yellow thread from the bottom of the toy (the start of crocheting), and bring it out at the first marker. Pass the thread through the loop on the eye, then insert the needle back into the same hole. Bring the thread back out at the start of crocheting, stepping 1 sc away from the insertion point, so you can pull the thread tight and secure the shaping with a knot. The eye post should sink into the body of the toy. Repeat the same steps with the second eye. Make sure the shaping pulls are symmetrical. This also makes the bottom of the toy flatter and more stable.

Sew the tail to the back, centered on the spine. Place it so it works as a support for your chick. It stretches along round 8. There are 8 sc between the outermost points. Mine covers 4 rounds in height. You can add stuffing if desired.

The beak is next. Shape it into a triangle with your fingers along the increase lines. Pin the top corner between the eyes, between rounds 32 and 33. The lower corners are positioned and sewn between rounds 28 and 29. There are 6 sc between the left and right corners. At the end of sewing, add stuffing, but not too much. Adjust the shape with your fingers.

If desired, crochet the eggshell with white yarn.

If desired, you can embroider eye whites and eyelashes, add a crest OR a funny hat.
