Sailor

Free crochet tutorial for the Sailor by Svetlana Lyutova @svet_lana_lyutova.
With this pattern you can crochet a sailor. Any acrylic or cotton blend yarn and a suitable hook will work for this amigurumi. The author recommends acrylic yarn (50 g / 200 m).
Finished toy size is about 17.5 cm.

- Acrylic yarn: white, light blue, skin tone, black, a tiny bit of yellow
- 1.6 mm crochet hook
- 5 mm safety eyes
- Toy filling
- A small piece of black raincoat fabric for the sailor cap
- Plastic lid for the insoles
- Cotton swab
- Glue
- Needle for sewing pieces together
- Scissors
Abbreviations
- MR - magic ring
- ch - chain stitch
- sl st - slip stitch
- sc - single crochet
- inc - increase
- dec - decrease
- puff stitch made of 3 dc - yarn over and insert the hook into the base stitch. Catch the working yarn and pull up a loop. Then catch the working yarn again and crochet the pulled-up loop and yarn over, leaving two loops on the hook. Yarn over again on the hook and insert it into the same base stitch. Crochet another unfinished stitch in the same way. Make the third unfinished stitch the same way. There should be four loops on the hook (three unfinished stitches and the working loop). Crochet Amigurumi Sailor Pattern
Legs (2 Pieces)
Both legs are crocheted the same way. Start with the shoe in black.
Ch 6
Rnd 1: starting from the 2nd stitch from the hook, crochet 4 sc - 3 sc in the last stitch - 3 sc - inc =12 sc
Rnd 2: inc - 3 sc - 3 inc - 3 sc - 2 inc =18 sc
Rnd 3: 1 sc - inc - 4 sc - inc - 1 sc - inc - 1 sc - inc - 4 sc - inc - 1 sc - inc =24 sc
Trace the finished piece onto plastic and cut out the insole. Melt the edges of the insole with a flame to make the cut edge smooth.
Rnd 4: 24 sc in the back loop only
Rnds 5-6: 24 sc (2 rnds)
Rnd 7: 6 sc - 6 dec - 6 sc =18 sc
Insert the plastic insole.
Rnd 8: 6 sc - 3 dec - 6 sc =15 sc
Change the yarn color to skin tone. Do NOT cut the black yarn; you will continue crocheting with it later.
Rnd 9: 15 sc in the back loop only
Rnds 10-11: 15 sc (2 rnds)
Stuff the leg firmly with fiberfill. Change yarn to black.
Rnd 12: 15 sc
Rnd 13: 15 sc in the back loop only
Rnds 14-19: 15 sc (6 rnds)
Rnd 20: inc, 14 sc =16 sc
In the next round, make the increases exactly on the sides. Turn the leg with the toe facing you, fold the leg in half, and crochet the increases into the edge stitches (in the photo they are marked with blue dots).

In my case it came out like this:
Rnd 21: 6 sc - inc - 6 sc - inc - 2 sc =18 sc
Rnd 22: 18 sc
Finish crocheting and cut the yarn. Crochet the second leg exactly the same way, but do NOT cut the yarn, because you will continue crocheting the body.
Now finish the lower part of the pants. To do this, join the black yarn to the remaining half loops of round 13 and crochet:
Rnd 1: 15 sc through the remaining half loops
Rnd 2: (4 sc - inc) x 3 times =18 sc
Rnd 3: (5 sc - inc) x 3 times =21 sc
Rnd 4: (6 sc - inc) x 3 times =24 sc
Rnd 5: 24 sc
Finish crocheting and cut the yarn.
Joining the Legs
Once both legs are ready, place them together so the toes are facing you. Now mark 1 stitch on each leg with a stitch marker at the place where the legs touch; this should be the center of the inner thigh (see photo).

Continue crocheting along the left leg in sc up to the marker, then - 1 sc in the stitch with the marker - 1 sc in the marked stitch of the right leg - 17 sc along the right leg - 1 sc into the left leg = 36 sc. Count the stitches.
Place a marker. This is the new beginning of the round.
Body
Rnds 1-4: 36 sc (4 rnds)
Rnd 5: 6 sc - 3 dec - 12 sc - 3 dec - 6 sc =30 sc
Before you continue crocheting, decide how you want to make the belt. If you are going to crochet the belt separately and simply sew it on later, crochet rounds 6 and 8 through both loops of the stitch. If you want to make it the way I did, crochet as written below:
Rnd 6: 30 sc in the back loop only
Rnd 7: 30 sc
Change yarn color to light blue
Rnd 8: 30 sc in the back loop only
Next, alternate light blue and white rounds.
Rnd 9: with white, 30 sc
Rnd 10: with light blue, 30 sc
Rnd 11: with white, 30 sc
Rnd 12: with light blue, 30 sc
Rnd 13: with white, 30 sc
Rnd 14: with light blue, 30 sc
Rnd 15: with white, 30 sc
Rnd 16: with light blue, 30 sc
Rnd 17: with white, (3 sc - dec) x 6 times =24 sc
Rnd 18: with light blue, (2 sc - dec) x 6 times =18 sc
Change yarn to skin tone
Rnd 19: in the back loop only, (4 sc - dec) x 3 times =15 sc
Rnds 20-22: 15 sc (3 rnds)
Finish with a sl st, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Stuff the body firmly. Join black yarn at the back to the remaining half loops of round 6 and wrap each half loop with yarn to define the belt area. Wrap the half loops of round 8 the same way.
Or, if you crocheted the belt separately, sew it around the sailor's waist. Embroider a yellow buckle on the belt and insert a cotton swab into the neck. The sailor's body is ready.
Head
Crochet with skin-tone yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR
Rnd 2: (inc) x 6 times =12 sc
Rnd 3: (1 sc - inc) x 6 times =18 sc
Rnd 4: (2 sc - inc) x 6 times =24 sc
Rnd 5: (3 sc - inc) x 6 times =30 sc
Rnd 6: (4 sc - inc) x 6 times =36 sc
Rnds 7-12: 36 sc (6 rnds)
Rnd 13: (5 sc - inc) x 6 times =42 sc
Rnds 14-16: 42 sc (3 rnds)
Rnd 17: (5 sc - dec) x 6 times =36 sc
Rnd 18: (4 sc - dec) x 6 times =30 sc
Rnd 19: (3 sc - dec) x 6 times =24 sc
Rnd 20: (2 sc - dec) x 6 times =18 sc
Rnd 21: (4 sc - dec) x 3 times =15 sc
Finish with a sl st and cut the yarn.
Ears (2 Pieces)
Use skin-tone yarn.
6 sc in MR, tighten, but do not join.
Arms (2 Pieces)
Both arms are crocheted the same way. Start with skin-tone yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR
Rnd 2: (inc) x 6 times =12 sc
Rnds 3-4: 12 sc (2 rnds)
Rnd 5: 1 sc - 1 puff stitch made of 3 dc in the next stitch - ch - 10 sc =13 sc
Rnd 6: 2 dec - 9 sc =11 sc
Join light blue yarn and crochet
Rnd 7: 4 sc - 2 dec - 3 sc =9 sc
Join white yarn and crochet
Rnd 8: in the back loop only, 3 sc - inc - 4 sc - inc =11 sc
Next, continue alternating light blue and white yarn:
Rnd 9: with light blue, 11 sc
Rnd 10: with white, 11 sc
Rnd 11: with light blue, 11 sc
Rnd 12: with white, 11 sc
Rnd 13: with light blue, 11 sc
Rnd 14: with white, 11 sc
Rnd 15: with light blue, 11 sc
Rnd 16: with white, 11 sc
Rnd 17: with light blue, 11 sc
Rnd 18: with white, 11 sc
Stuff lightly with fiberfill, fold the arm in half so the thumb is on the side, and if needed, crochet offset stitches with light blue yarn only. Then crochet:
Rnd 19: with light blue yarn, 5 sc through both loops.
Leave a yarn tail for sewing.
Shirt Cuff
Join light blue yarn to the remaining half loops of round 8 and crochet 9 sl st.
Sailor Cap
Crochet the top of the sailor cap with white yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR
Rnd 2: (inc) x 6 times =12 sc
Rnd 3: (1 sc - inc) x 6 times =18 sc
Rnd 4: (2 sc - inc) x 6 times =24 sc
Rnd 5: (3 sc - inc) x 6 times =30 sc
Rnd 6: (4 sc - inc) x 6 times =36 sc
Rnd 7: (5 sc - inc) x 6 times =42 sc
Rnd 8: (6 sc - inc) x 6 times =48 sc
Finish and cut the yarn.
Crochet the base of the sailor cap in black:
Ch 30. Do NOT make the chains too tight. Join into a ring, try it on the head; the ring should fit easily over the top of the head. Then crochet:
Rnds 1-3: 30 sc (3 rnds)
Join white yarn and crochet:
Rnd 4: (1 sc - inc) x 7 times - 2 inc - (1 sc - inc) x 7 times =46 sc
Rnd 5: inc - 22 sc - inc - 22 sc = 48 sc
Rnd 6: 48 sc
Do NOT cut the yarn.
Next, place the top part of the sailor cap (right side up) against the base and crochet both parts together through both loops =48 sc

Finish crocheting, cut the yarn, and hide the end inside.

Embroider lettering or an anchor. Cut two ribbons from black raincoat fabric (I melted the ribbon edges with a match so they would not fray) and sew them to the back of the sailor cap. You can crochet these ribbons if you prefer.
I also crocheted around the bottom round of the sailor cap with slip stitches (using black yarn). Lightly and evenly stuff the sailor cap with fiberfill. The sailor cap is ready!
Toy Assembly
- You can glue on ready-made eyes; I attached mine between rounds 11 and 12 of the head. Or embroider them if you prefer.
- Shape the nose and eyebrows by embroidering them.
- Sew the ears to the sides of the head, visually level with the eyes.
- Sailor cap: sew the sailor cap to the head between rounds 6 and 8, slightly angled if you like.
- Sew the head to the body.
- Sew the arms to the body between rounds 16 and 17.
