Legs (2 pieces)

Take 2 mm wire about 60 cm long and make a leg frame according to the diagram. Then coat one toe with glue and wrap it tightly with brown (or black) thread. Wrap all 4 toes and the leg itself to a height of about 6-7 cm, and secure the thread ends with glue.

Make the second leg the same way. Insert both finished legs into the body in the first row from the bottom, stepping back 2 cm from the edges. Adjust the leg height as desired; it can be from 3 to 6 cm, and secure them inside the body with electrical tape (or fabric medical tape), wrapping it in a thick layer around each leg.

Twist the leg wires together and insulate them. Then stuff the body. Join the top edges of the body with sl st, fasten off, and cut the yarn.

Wings (2 pieces)

Crochet with the same yarn as for the body, in turning rows.

Row 1: ch 2, 2 sc in the second chain from hook, ch, turn (2)
Row 2: 2 inc, ch, turn (4)
Row 3: inc, 2 sc, inc, ch, turn (6)
Row 4: inc, 4 sc, inc, ch, turn (8)
Row 5: inc, 6 sc, inc, ch, turn (10)
Row 6: inc, 8 sc, inc, ch, turn (12)

Row 12: dec, 8 sc, dec, ch, turn (10)
Row 13: dec, 6 sc, dec, ch, turn (8)
Row 14: dec, 4 sc, dec (6)

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing the wing, and cut the yarn. Crochet the second wing the same way. Sew the wings to the sides of the body, about 3 sc rows down from the neck.

Tail

Crochet with the same yarn as for the body, in turning rows.

Row 1: chain 11, starting in the second chain from hook crochet 10 sc, ch, turn (10)
Rows 2-4 (3 rows): 10 sc, ch, turn (10)
Row 5: dec, 6 sc, dec, ch, turn (8)
Rows 6-10 (5 rows): 8 sc, ch, turn (8)

In row 10, do not cut the yarn; continue with the edging.

Tail

First crochet sc along the side edge of the tail, then 2 sc in the bottom corner, 5 dc in the next stitch along the bottom of the tail, skip 1 sc, sc, skip 1 sc, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1 sc, sc, 5 dc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the bottom corner of the tail, then again crochet sc along the side edge of the tail up to the top corner.

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing, and cut the yarn. Sew the tail to the center back.

Finishing

Eyes

  • Cut 2 white felt eye pieces sized (W x H) 3 x 4 cm. Make small center slits in each piece with scissors.
  • Insert blue (or any other color) pupils/safety eyes, 25 mm in diameter, into the slits.
  • Glue the pupils to the felt eye pieces with super glue.
  • Glue false eyelashes on top of the felt eye pieces.
  • Try the finished eyes on the owl head, placing them in the 17th row from the top row of crochet. The distance between the eyes can be whatever you like best.
  • Glue the eyes to the head with clear super glue.
  • Add shading around the eyes with brown dry pastels (optional).

Beak

Option 1. Polymer clay.

Shape the beak from yellow, orange, or brown polymer clay. Mine turned out as a small equilateral triangle with sides about 1 cm. You can make the beak any size you like. Using the blunt end of a thick needle, make two small holes on top of the beak to imitate nostrils. Bake according to instructions, let it cool, and glue it between the eyes with super glue.

Option 2. Crocheted beak.

Crochet with yellow, orange, or brown yarn (optional). I used yarn 150 m / 50 g and a 2 mm hook.

Row 1: ch 2, 2 sc in the second chain from hook, ch, turn (2)
Row 2: 2 inc, ch, turn (4)
Row 3: inc, 2 sc, inc (6)

Do not cut the yarn; edge the beak around with sl st, then fasten off and cut. Sew the crocheted beak with black thread using tiny stitches where the nostrils are. After the owl is fully finished, brush it with hook-and-loop tape or a comb with sparse teeth.

Cap

First crochet the ribbed brim for the cap with white yarn.

Row 1: ch 4 + 1 tch, starting in the second chain from hook crochet 4 sc, ch, turn (4)
Rows 2-54 (53 rows): BLO 4 sc, ch, turn (4)

Do not cut the yarn. Join the brim edges with 4 sl st through both loops. Continue crocheting and work sc along the top of the brim.

Row 1: 54 sc (54), then continue in a spiral.
Rows 2-3: 54 sc (54)
Change yarn color to turquoise (optional). Note: If you want a striped cap like mine, then alternate every 4 rows of white and 3 rows of turquoise from this point on.
Row 4: (7 sc, dec) x 6 (48)
Rows 5-7 (3 rows): 48 sc (48)
Row 8: (6 sc, dec) x 6 (42)
Rows 9-11 (3 rows): 42 sc (42)
Row 12: (5 sc, dec) x 6 (36)
Rows 13-15 (3 rows): 36 sc (36)
Row 16: (4 sc, dec) x 6 (30)
Rows 17-20 (4 rows): 30 sc (30)
Row 21: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)
Rows 22-25 (4 rows): 24 sc (24)
Row 26: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)
Rows 27-30 (4 rows): 18 sc (18)
Row 31: (sc, dec) x 6 (12)
Rows 32-35 (4 rows): 12 sc (12)
Row 36: 6 dec (6)

Pull the remaining opening closed, fasten off, and cut the yarn. Sew a pompom on top of the cap, and decorate the cap with buttons or other decor elements (optional).
