Chick in an Eggshell

Free crochet tutorial for a Chick in an Eggshell by Anastasia Popova @popova_toys.
With this pattern, you can crochet a plush chick wearing eggshell shorts. Any plush yarn will work for this amigurumi project. The designer suggests making the bird with LaVita Velur. The required shades and yarn amounts are listed below. The whole toy is crocheted as one piece from bottom to top. The legs are crocheted as you go. You get a cute plush chick in little eggshell shorts, a great Easter keepsake.
Finished chick toy size: about 12 cm.

Start with the eggshell
Stuff the toy as you crochet. With white yarn:
Row 1. 6 sc in MR
Row 2. 6 inc (12)
Row 3. (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Row 4. (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
In Row 5, crochet the legs.
Row 5. 10 sc, (on the 10th sc change color to orange) for the leg: ch 10, in the 5th ch from the hook crochet sl st, then ch 4, make sl st in the same place as before, ch 4 again, make sl st in the same place as before, then crochet 5 sl st back along the chain, change color to white and make sl st into the stitch of the row, 5 sc, (on the 5th sc change color to orange) for the leg: ch 10, in the 5th ch from the hook crochet sl st, then ch 4, make sl st in the same place as before, ch 4 again, make sl st in the same place as before, then crochet 5 sl st back along the chain, change color to white and make sl st into the stitch of the row, 9 sc (24)

In Row 12, crochet the wings.

In Row 16, crochet the beak.

Insert the eyes between Rows 18 and 19, with 4-5 sc between the eye stems

Stuff the toy firmly. Cut the yarn, fasten off, pull the opening closed, and hide the tail inside the head.
Finishing the toy
- Embroider the whites on the outer sides of the eyes with white yarn.
- Embroider lines above the eyes with black thread, angled downward. Adjust the length as needed.
- Embroider eyebrows with black thread, offset 1 row above the eyes; eyebrow length is 2 sc. Leave 5 sc between the eyebrows.
- Crochet the tuft on top of the head with orange yarn: join yarn and crochet between rows: sc, hdc, dc inc, hdc, sc, sl st, bring both yarn tails out to one spot, tie a couple of knots, and hide the yarn ends inside the toy.

- Make the eggshell edging: return to the FLO in Row 10, join white yarn and crochet (hold the toy with the head up while edging): (hdc inc, sl st) x 15 (45)
