Amigurumi Crochet Bunny Pattern
Body: a covered tennis ball. The ball is filled with beads, so the bunny rustles and rattles. Let's start by covering the tennis ball:
1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc (12)
3: (inc, sc) x 6 (18)
1 stitch for offset
4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
5: (inc, 3 sc) x 6 (30)
6: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 5, 2 sc (36)
7: 4 sc, inc, (5 sc, inc) x 5, sc (42)
8: (6 sc, inc) x 5 (48)
9: 2 sc, inc, (7 sc, inc) x 5, 5 sc (54)
Increase rounds are done. You should get a flat circle about 3.5 cm in diameter. If you place this circle on top of the tennis ball and look from above, the ball should not be visible. Continue without increases. Crochet the next 13 rounds this way.
10-22: 54 sc
Now use something hard and sharp (I used small manicure scissors) to make a small hole in the ball and fill it with beads.
There should be enough beads to give the ball some weight. This is needed so the filled bunny head will not outweigh the empty body later. However, do not turn the ball into a heavy weight. The body should be only slightly heavier than the head filled with fiberfill.
Insert the ball into the crocheted cover. Turn the hole toward the fabric right away so the beads do not spill out.
Start decrease rounds using the same scheme as the increases, but in reverse order. If all decreases are done and the ball is still not fully closed, keep decreasing until it closes.
Head
Start crocheting from the back of the head.
1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc (12)
3: (inc, sc) x 6 (18)
1 stitch for offset
4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
5: (inc, 3 sc) x 6 (30)
6: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 5, 2 sc (36)
7: 4 sc, inc, (5 sc, inc) x 5, sc (42)
8-11: 42 sc
12: (dec, 5 sc) x 6 (36)
13-14: 36 sc
15: (dec, 4 sc) x 6 (30)
16-17: 30 sc
18: (dec, 3 sc) x 6 (24)
19: 24 sc
20: (dec, 2 sc) x 6 (18)
21: 18 sc
Stuff the piece.
22: (dec, sc) x 6 (12)
23: 4 dec (8)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail so you can thread a needle and pull the remaining stitches closed with a whip stitch.
Back Legs (2 pieces)
1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc (12)
3: (inc, sc) x 6 (18)
4: 8 inc, 10 sc (26)
5-6: 26 sc (26)
7: (3 sc, dec) x 5 (21)
8: (2 sc, dec) x 5 (16)
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing the leg to the body later.
Front Legs (2 pieces)
1: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc (12)
3: (inc, sc) x 6 (18)
4-7: 18 sc
Cut the yarn and leave a long tail as well.
Ears (2 pieces)
Chain 14 ch. Work double crochets (dc) along this chain, starting from the 5th chain from the hook: 9 dc, then 8 dc in the last chain. Turn the work and continue along the other side of the chain: 10 dc. After the last dc, insert the hook into the top of the first dc (which was replaced by 3 turning chains) and make 1 sl st.
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Tail
1: 6 sc in MR (6)
2: 6 inc (12)
3-5: 12 sc (12)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.
Toy Assembly
All parts are ready, so you can assemble them into one toy.
First sew on the head. Place it in the center of the ball, on the side where you made the decreases. Press it firmly to the body and sew around.
But we need the head to blend with the body more so the neck transition is smoother. So press the head firmly once again, tilting it slightly backward, and sew around a second time.
Next, sew on the front legs. Stuff the legs before sewing. To place them correctly on the body, try on the back legs at the same time.
Once the bunny has the correct pose, meaning it does not tip over and stands straight, pin the front legs and sew them on. Do the same with the back legs: pin first, then sew.
Now that the bunny stands straight and has its shape, sew on the ears. The final touch is the tail.
By the way, if the bunny still tips forward slightly, you can put a bead of suitable size inside the tail instead of stuffing.
Shaping the Face
For the eyes, make eye indentations. You will need a very strong thread folded in half, with a knot at the end. I use denim sewing thread. Pierce the head all the way through. The needle should enter and exit at the points where the eyes will be placed.
Pull the needle and thread through, leaving the knotted end not fully tightened against the head. Then pierce the head in the opposite direction, pass the needle through the loop made by the knotted tail, and tighten well.
Repeat this a couple more times at the eye-sculpting points, tightening as needed. Then insert the needle somewhere at the back of the head, cut the thread from the needle, tie 2-3 knots, trim, and hide the end inside with a needle or hook.
Shade around the eyes with a dark color. I use dry pastels. Add a little shading around the nose area.
Sew on bead eyes. Embroider the nose with embroidery floss.
Since the bunny is made with mohair, you can brush it with hook-and-loop tape or a slicker brush before sewing on the eyes.
