Plush Baby Whale

Free Baby Whale crochet tutorial by Anastasia Konovalova @igruschki_zefir.

With this pattern, you can crochet a plush baby whale. Any plush yarn works for amigurumi: Himalaya Dolphin Baby, YarnArt Dolce, Kamteks Velur, and others.

Finished toy size is about 27-28 cm long and 15 cm wide.

Materials and Tools

• Plush yarn Himalaya Dolphin Baby or YarnArt Dolce (main yarn for toy)
• Coco Vita Cotton yarn or analogs (for crocheting eyes)
• 4.0-4.5 mm crochet hook
• Synthetic poly filling
• Pins
• Needle for sewing parts

Tail

Now crochet the tail. Pull out hook but do not cut yarn. From the end of crocheting, count back 6 sc and pull a loop through with the hook. The opening is now split into 2 equal parts, 6 sc each around.

Crochet first half of the tail (the second half is exactly the same):

Cut yarn, fasten off, tighten opening, hide tail inside toy. Do not stuff tail.

Side Fins (2 pieces)

From the start, count 16 rounds down and place pins 3 stitches left and right from marker. Then from those pins, step 3 more stitches to each side and place pins again. Then step 2 rounds up and 2 rounds down and place one more pin in center from first pair (you should get diamond shapes).

Now crochet fins. Start from the whale's snout side:

Cut yarn, fasten off, tighten opening, hide yarn inside toy. Do not stuff fins.

Back Fin

Find center of back. Count about 21 rounds from start and place pin. From it, step 4 rounds down and place another pin; do the same on sides to make a diamond. I got 11 sc around. I also crocheted row 2 with 11 sc, then simply made decreases to the end until opening became very small, then cut yarn, fastened, tightened opening, and hid the yarn inside.

Chest

Crochet with contrast color in turning rows; do not forget a turning ch at start of each row. Chain 8 ch:

White color. From top of chest count 18 rows down, insert hook and crochet:

On the other side crochet the same symmetrically; flip chest so fin mirrors first one. Then edge the whole chest around with sc.

Eyes (2 pieces)

1: Start with black yarn: 6 sc in MR
2: 6 inc (12)
3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18), change yarn to blue
4: (2 sc, inc) x 4, 1 sc, change yarn to white
5: move white yarn up behind eye, stepping 2 stitches from blue, pull white yarn through and continue around by inserting hook into next stitch immediately: (3 sc, inc) x 4, 2 sc, sl st, pull loop, fasten, cut, leaving tail for sewing.

Eye Detailing

For left eye, crochet 15 sl st with black Vita Coco yarn, starting above black edge. When making each sl st, pull yarn slightly so eye does not tighten. Then thread black yarn in needle and stitch a stripe over blue area with regular stitches.

For right eye, make black sl st starting from white edge, counting 6 stitches up from bottom along white edge, and crochet 15 sl st to black area. Stitch black stripe over blue area the same way. For sewing, leave black and white yarn tails; other yarn ends can be tied under eye and cut.
