Astronaut

A free astronaut crochet pattern by Anna Eliseeva @ann_the_amigurumer.

Use these instructions to crochet an astronaut. You can use any acrylic, cotton, or cotton blend yarn and a suitable crochet hook for this amigurumi project.

Materials and tools

• Yarn: white, gray, and black
• Crochet hook
• Fiberfill
• White and black felt
• Needle for sewing the pieces together
• Scissors

Head

Crochet with white yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Round 2: (inc) x 6 (12)
Round 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Round 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Round 6: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)
Round 7: (11 sc, inc) x 3 (39)
Rounds 8-13: 39 sc
Round 14: (11 sc, dec) x 3 (36)

Begin stuffing.

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave the end inside. Cut a black oval and a white highlight from felt. Sew the highlight onto the black oval, then sew the oval to the head to form the helmet visor.

Ears (make 2)

Crochet with gray yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Round 2: (inc) x 6 (12)
Round 3: (3 sc, inc) x 3 (15)

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Lightly stuff the ears and sew them to the head.

Arms (make 2)

Begin with gray yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Round 2: (inc, 1 sc) x 3 (9)
Switch to white yarn.
Rounds 3-6: 9 sc
Round 7: 3 sc, dec, 4 sc (8)

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a short tail for joining the arm to the body. Embroider black stripes between Rounds 4 and 5 and between Rounds 6 and 7. Stuff lightly.

Legs (make 2)

Begin with gray yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Round 2: (inc) x 6 (12)
Round 3: BLO: 12 sc (12)
Round 4: 4 sc, dec, dec, 4 sc (10)
Switch to white yarn.
Rounds 5-8: 10 sc

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave in the ends. Embroider a black stripe between Rounds 7 and 8. Stuff.

Body

Crochet with white yarn. Join the legs through two stitches in the center (sewing thread works best because you will also crochet into these stitches). Position the legs with the heels facing you and begin crocheting in the joining stitch on the left leg that is closest to you (see the diagram).

Round 9: 10 sc around the left leg, 10 sc around the right leg (20)
Rounds 10-13: 20 sc
Round 14: (3 sc, dec) x 4 (16)
Round 15: 16 sc

Attach the arms to the body through one stitch each, leaving 7 stitches between them (see the diagram).

Round 16: 4 sc around the body; dec from the body to the left arm; dec, 1 sc, dec around the arm; dec from the left arm to the body; 5 sc around the body; dec from the body to the right arm; dec, 1 sc, dec around the arm; dec from the right arm to the body; 1 sc around the body (20)
Round 17: 20 sc
Round 18: (3 sc, dec) x 4 (16)
Round 19: 3 sc, 1 sl st

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Embroider a black stripe between Rounds 11 and 12. Embroider a small gray square on the chest. Stuff. Sew the head to the body.
