Amigurumi crochet alpaca in a cape

A free crochet tutorial for Alpaca in a Cape by Irina Artemova @irinely_art.

Using this pattern, you can crochet an alpaca in a bright Mexican-style cape. Any yarn and a matching crochet hook will work for this amigurumi project. The toy cannot stand on its own. The cape is removable and ties on with strings.

The finished toy measures about 22 cm (including the ears).

Materials and tools

  • YarnArt Jeans yarn (76 turquoise blue), half a skein (about 22 g)
  • Alize Baby Best yarn (55 white) for the muzzle, ears, tail, and paw tips
  • Acrylic yarn (yellow), (green), (red) for the clothing
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • 6 mm safety eyes
  • Thread for embroidering the nose
  • Toy stuffing
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Ears (make 2)

With white yarn:
Round 1: 6 in MR
Round 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9)
Round 3: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12)
Rounds 4-10: 12 sc (7 rounds)

Do not stuff. Fold in half and sew the tip closed. Leave a tail for sewing to the head.

Tail

With white yarn:
Round 1: 6 in MR
Round 2: 6 inc (12)
Rounds 3-8: 12 sc (6 rounds)

Do not stuff. Sewing it closed is optional, since this piece will be crocheted into the body.

Muzzle

With white yarn:

Embroider the nose in black in the shape of the letter Y.

Cape

With yellow yarn:
Row 1: 81 ch
Row 2: Starting in the second chain from the hook, 80 sc
Cut the yarn, leaving a short tail. You will secure it later so the stitches do not unravel.
With yellow yarn:
Row 3: Insert the hook into the 19th stitch, make 2 tch, then work 40 dc into the next stitch, turn the work
With red yarn:
Row 4: 2 tch, 40 dc, turn the work
With green yarn:
Row 5: 2 tch, 40 dc, turn the work
With yellow yarn:
Row 6: 2 tch, 40 dc, turn the work
Row 7: 1 tch, 40 sc

Next, edge the cape all around with single crochet stitches using yellow yarn:

All that is left is to weave in the ends and trim them. The cape is ready.
